GO TO THE ORR HISTORY PAGE 3

Our genealogical interest in the ORR family would normally not extend to William Orr who is a paternal uncle of THOMAS ORR, whose daughter, Sarah Ann, married Thomas F. Rankin.  However, William was one reason Thomas Orr came to Pendleton District, if not a major incentive for Thomas' emigration to the United States in the first place.

William Orr arrived in time to be listed as #817 in the 1800 Census of Pendleton District.  His age is given as between 26 and 45 and he is shown to be the owner of no slaves.  I suspect that he lived in the Charleston SC area for a time, as a  "Jones family from Charleston" is listed among the "bad debts" in his estate papers.

He had "made it big" over here as evident by the amount of money owed to him at his death. He also owned three pairs of shoes, 14 bound books, two bedsteads, and an assortment of tableware, two horses and three cows.  This would indicate a man of some means.  He is named as a Merchant; however, he owned/operated a grist mill and from the appraisal/inventory and sale records, his "merchandise" is in the form of various grains and the grinding of them into usable forms. In the inventory there were piles of various kinds of grain in various locations in the barn and at least two patches of corn ready to be harvested.

His death came unexpectedly; a pair of cut-out, but not sewn pantaloons was sold at the estate sale.  He died in the summer of 1803 between court sessions.  The administrators for his estate were appointed the 2nd day of Sept. 1803.

A lucky coincidence for us is the fact that William and George Rankin's names appear in the lists of purchasers, debtors and as the repairers of the grist mill, which needed enough repairs for them to discount half of their bill. Theirs was one of the larger ones in the account.  The linkage between William and George is even more important to our study of this line as it comes a few years before the marriage of George to his cousin, Mary "Polly" the reputed daughter of William.  But that's another line.

William Orr's estate papers are located in the South Carolina Department of Archives and History on microfilm Roll 525, C 1131. His link with Thomas Orr comes with a bond signed by Thomas Orr promising to protect the court appointed administrators from future claims by heirs to the estate of William Orr after they settle the estate with Thomas.  This appears in Anderson County Deeds, Book H, page 209, C943. Thomas Orr's story will link him to the heirs of William Orr in Ireland.

[I have transcribed the following to the best of my ability.  The handwriting is not the best; the microfilm copy is not as free from smudges and streaks as one would like.  The total number of pages came to 24--far too many to reproduce in total.  I've included those entries of most interest and have tried for a representative sampling of all.  Most is an item by item listing of who owed him how much money, but not for what.
